Alright folks, let's talk about something sparkly, something blue, and something seriously special: Tanzanite!

If you've been following my adventures, you know I love finding unique treasures, and Tanzanite is right up there with the best of them. Think of it as Zanzibar's hidden gem... literally.

A Quick History Lesson (Because Why Not?)

Tanzanite is a relatively new kid on the gemstone block. It was only discovered in 1967 in the Mererani Hills of Tanzania (hence the name). It's a type of zoisite, and its vibrant blue-violet color is what makes it so darn captivating. It's a one-hit wonder, too – it's only found in that one specific spot in the world. Talk about rare!

Rare As Hen's Teeth (And Pricey, Too)

Here's the kicker: Tanzanite is incredibly rare. Some experts predict that the mines will be exhausted within the next few decades. This scarcity has, of course, driven up the price. We're talking serious increases. According to some reports, prices have seen significant fluctuations, and high-quality tanzanite has soared in value over the last decade. It's not uncommon to see prices double or even triple for top-grade stones, especially as the supply dwindles.

Think of it like this: just like diamonds, Tanzanite's value depends on the 4Cs (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight). A deep, intense blue with minimal inclusions (those tiny imperfections inside the stone) will fetch a much higher price than a paler, less clear stone. Just like diamonds, you can get everything from super affordable small stones to jaw-dropping, investment-grade gems.

Bling It On: Tanzanite Jewelry Galore

You can find Tanzanite in just about any piece of jewelry you can imagine: rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets, you name it. The deep blue-violet color makes it incredibly versatile. It looks stunning in white gold, yellow gold, or platinum settings.

  • Rings: From elegant solitaire rings to intricate halo designs, tanzanite rings are a showstopper.

  • Pendants: A simple tanzanite pendant can add a touch of sophistication to any outfit.

  • Earrings: Tanzanite studs or dangle earrings are perfect for adding a pop of color.

  • Bracelets: Tennis bracelets or delicate charm bracelets featuring tanzanite are always a hit.

The quality of the stone and the craftsmanship of the setting will heavily influence the price. Like a diamond, the clearer and more vibrant the color, the more expensive it will be.

Shop Smart: Stonetown's Tanzanite Treasures

Now, here's where my insider tip comes in. If you're in Zanzibar and want to buy Tanzanite, do not buy it from just anyone. There are fakes and low-quality stones out there. Stick to the official Tanzanite stores in Stonetown, and always, always get a full certificate of authenticity. This is crucial!

And, of course, I have my personal favorite: Artisans. They're located in Stonetown, and they've always treated me and everyone I've sent there incredibly well. They have a fantastic selection, great prices (I've actually visited all the stores in the area and compared), and the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. You find their store at Kenyatta Road, very close to The Old Fort.

When you go, tell them Tord sent you. You might just get lucky and snag an even better price! (Seriously, I don't get anything from this. I just want you to get the best deal possible as one of my precious readers.)

The Perfect Gift from Zanzibar

If you're looking for a truly unique and memorable gift from Zanzibar, Tanzanite is it. It's beautiful, it's rare, and it has a fascinating story. Plus, it's a gift that will be treasured for a lifetime.

So, there you have it, folks. My guide to all things TSanzanite. Happy shopping, and may your travels be filled with sparkly treasures!
