Zanzibar Packing: Keepin' it Chill

Updated: Mar 10

Before you get lost in daydreams of turquoise waters, let's talk packing. You know, the stuff that'll make your trip smoother than a dhow sailing at sunset.

The Essentials (and a Few Extras):

  • Beachwear, Duh!: Bikinis, board shorts, whatever floats your boat. But, dudes, pack a pair of long trousers. Trust me, they're clutch for evenings when the mozzies are out and about, and some restaurants appreciate a bit of effort. A hat or cap? Yeah, your head will thank you.

  • Sunscreen & Aftersun: Seriously, the sun here is no joke. Don't be that lobster-red tourist. Slather it on, and bring aftersun for those "oops" moments.

  • Eco-Friendly Bags: Plastic bags are a no-go in Zanzibar. While enforcement might be a little lax, let's be good humans. Bring your own reusable bags, like those cool cloth ones. You can snag some on the island too, if you forget.

  • Power Up!: A power bank is your best friend for keeping your phone alive for all those envy-inducing Instagram shots. No one wants a dead battery mid-sunset.

  • Power Adapters (If Needed): Don't get caught with dead devices! If your plugs are different, bring adapters. (Check out my other blog post for all the outlet details!)

  • Waterproof Everything!: Excursions often involve getting wet. A waterproof bag or backpack will save your tech and valuables from a watery grave.

  • Footwear Freedom: Bathing shoes are a must for exploring the reef at low tide. Trust me, those coral bits are sharp. Flip-flops or sandals are perfect for everyday island life.

  • Your Own Beach Towel: Don't assume your hotel will let you borrow theirs for the beach. Bring your own, just in case.

  • Ouchies Happen: Pack some waterproof adhesive bandages. You never know when you'll get a scrape or a blister.

  • Mosquito Defense: Mosquito spray is non-negotiable. Those little buggers are persistent. Save yourself the itchy misery.

  • Visa Application Approval Form (Printed): Don't rely on your phone! Print out that visa approval email. Having it in hand makes immigration a breeze. (More info in another blog post!)

  • Passport Power: Double-check your passport! It needs to be valid for at least six months after you plan to leave Zanzibar. Super important.

  • Insurance QR Code (Phone Ready): Have that mandatory insurance QR code ready to roll on your phone. They'll want to scan it. (Check out the other blog post for details!)

A Few Extra Thoughts:

  • Remember Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim island, so when you are away from the tourist beaches, it is advisable to dress a little more conservatively.

  • Withdraw some cash at the ATM for tipping. It's a common practice and much appreciated (again there are blog posts here about this topic in more detail).

  • Enjoy! Zanzibar is a magical place. Just relax, soak it all in, and have an amazing time.

Karibu Zanzibar!

Hi and thanks for dropping by!

If this article gave you valuable insights and answers to questions you may have, please share it with your fellow travellers and others that you think could benefit from it.

Every day I sadly read false and misleading information in various Facebook groups, so for me it's a goal to get more people to move away from those highly unreliable sources and get real facts and information. Then they will have a much better experience when visiting this beautiful island.

And don't forget to check out all the other articles here, updates and new ones are added all the time.
